Barnaby Ridge

Region: Castle

Distance: 14 km (return)

Elevation gain: 1000 m or 3300 feet

Rating: Unofficial trail and off-trail ridge hike

Estimated hiking time: 6 to 8 hours

Description: This trip begins about 3 km north of Castle Mountain Resort, at the end of a   rough track about 0.5 km off Hwy. 774. Additional footwear (sandals or rubber boots) is required to cross the West Castle River soon after leaving the vehicles. The route follows the unofficial trail to Southfork Lakes, which lie in a hanging basin at the north end of Barnaby Ridge. The trail climbs first through forest, then breaks out onto a steep, open slope. After cresting the ridge, the trail climbs through the forest until it emerges at the lowest of the three lakes. The rough trail climbs steeply to the upper lake. From the upper lake, ascend the west ridge, then follow the ridge as far as time and conditions allow. Return via the same route.
