Bertha Lake

Region: Waterton

Distance: 15 km (return, including lake circumnavigation)

Elevation gain: 500 m or 1600 feet

Rating: Park trail hike

Estimated hiking time: 5 to 6 hours

Description: A popular hike on maintained trails. The trail starts at the south end of
Waterton townsite and climbs gradually along Upper Waterton Lake, before turning west
to reach Lower Bertha Falls. From there the trail climbs more steeply on switchbacks
through the forest, alongside Upper Bertha Falls, to crest a low ridge that overlooks Bertha Lake. The lake is surrounded by mountains: Bertha Peak on the right, Mt. Richards on the left and Mt. Alderson at the head of the lake. The park trail continues around the lake (4 km) before returning to the trailhead. A short but worthwhile detour can also be made to a viewpoint of Upper Waterton Lake behind the campground. Return the same way.
