Prairie Bluff

Region: Castle

Distance: 11 km

Elevation gain: 730 m or 2400 feet

Rating: Mostly off-trail hike

Estimated hiking time: 4 to 5 hours

Description: This trip is great for shoulder season, but can also be done as a snowshoe
when snow conditions are favourable. A useful starting point is at the gated access road
about 2 km north of the gas facility at the mouth of the Pincher Creek valley, northwest of the Shell Plant. There are a number of alternative routes. A good option is to ascend the basin between the arms of Prairie Bluff, then climb up to the peak via the north ridge. To descend, follow the road along the west ridge past the intersection with the main road heading south, then drop down to an old trail that takes you back to the starting point. Prairie Bluff is also known locally as Corner Mountain.
